When starting out with albums, many customers have some initial confusion around the first spread of the album.
Looking at the 2 images above, you can see that when you open the album, the first thing you come across is a black lining - the lining has a linen type texture to is.
When you then turn the next page, you come to the first spread. Nearly all our customers use the whole spread - both sides - on this first spread.
However, some people prefer to have an image only on the right side. In this case, we still need a spread, so they leave it either white or black, typically. So if for example it is an 8x8 album, we still need a spread 16x8, just the left side is white or black.
Spreads versus Pages - always confusing! We get this question a lot.
The convention now is where it should be, we feel! 1 spread = 2 pages.

We do get asked about sample albums – how many and what size typically.
Based on what customers tell us, we have found -
- You sell what you show. Without samples, it is very hard to sell albums (or anything else, for that matter!)
- Bigger is better. No, this is not just album companies trying to upsell you! – the psychology goes something like this – if you show an 8x8 album, you will sell a certain amount + you will likely sell a bunch of 6x6 albums. So by way of example using fictitious numbers – If you show an 8x8 sample, let’s say you sell 15 8x8’s and 20 6x6 albums a year. Highly unlikely you will sell any 10x10’s. However, if you show them a 10x10 album, you may not sell them any 10x10’s still, but you will sell them MORE 8x8’s and less 6x6 albums. By showing them 10x10’s, the impact of a large album makes it hard for them to go all the way down to a 6x6, and you may get into a conversation around the 10x10 being too much money, so they then go for an 8x8.
- A number of our successful customers tell us that they only show 10x10 albums, and tell their clients that like 90% or more people go for the 10x10 album. And yes, they sell mostly 10x10’s!
- Keep the samples current – I think this especially applies if your style changes over time. People will look through your albums, and at first will be looking at how other clients pose, dress etc. and use that to imagine themselves in the same poses. So if you show styles/work that you have moved away from, you will not be doing yourself any favors by showing them old work.
If you are new to The Boudoir Album - we have tried to make the ordering process as simple as possible. As a result, we do not use one of the industry standard programs - all we ask is you fill out an online form, and upload the designs/images to a secure FTP site.
To order albums
What we need - FILE FORMAT
Please provide spreads in jpeg @ 300dpi. The first and last are also spreads.
Either number the files in the required sequence, or provide a contact sheet showing the correct sequence.
Clearly mark the cover image should there be one. Please be more specific than just "Cover image.jpg" - put your studio name or some other unique identifier -e.g. carol cover.jpg
NOTE on files
Your files are only visible to yourself and our administration. You have the ability to delete the files on your folder.
We will delete the files shortly after we have processed the order. We will not keep your files longer than 3 or 4 weeks.
What we are prepared to print
General nudity is absolutely no problem. If the album is getting towards the ‘porn’ category or should you have any doubt at all please talk to us.
We will not print anything that can be considered illegal in some jurisdictions without consulting you - underage nudity for example. We will always consult with you before considering a decision not to print.
